Stephen Vitiello

May 13, 2007

There is something magical about Steven Vitiello’s sound pieces. As I sat at my desk listening to his different works I found myself entranced, engulfed in a world of unique tings and tongs. Specifying his art as a combination and assemblages of sounds is an amazing and intriguing form of artistic expression and one that I can appreciate very much. I don’t think many people use their sense of hearing as much as they used to. If you just close your eyes, there are so many different sounds. Right now I can hear birds chirping, the ice cream truck man about five blocks away, people having a funny conversation as they walk down the sidewalk. But what is so great about Vitiello is that he goes even deeper with normal everyday sounds, he hears the creaking of buildings and the buzz of night street lights. It’s amazing, he’s amazing and his art will inspire me for years to come.

M. River & T. Whid Art Association.
I am sad I missed their lecture, because their work is so funny and so different than anything I’ve seen, in the digital art realm anyways. I would have liked to hear what they had to say about themselves and their work and the meanings behind some of their pieces. Looking at their website, through experimentation, they have progressed a lot. From their 2000 piece, “Website Unseen #20; In Ohio, In The Fall, You Were Young,” where they created a website with a game of pong you can play while one of the artist talks about how his first video game was pong, to their, “To Be Listened To…” piece in which they collaborated with other artist for audio plugs about what to listen to in funny situations. They are definitely exploring the internet and using it in a positive and humorous way to disperse new and creative forms of art.

Jillian McDonald Lecture

April 23, 2007

A digital artist/marathon runner from Canada, who now lives in Brooklyn, New York, Jillian McDonald creates video performances as well as public performances based on American popular culture. Her first video piece entitled, “Me and Billy Bob” was a mixture of movie scenes the actor Billy Bob Thorton has been in which she digitally placed herself into. Exploring the thought of obsession in a culture enamored with celebrities, she found Billy Bob Thorton a subtle yet known actor in which she could experiment this idea with. McDonald is intrigued with why people fall in love with celebrities and how it is sustained over long periods of time. In the process of making the piece about Billy Bob she incidentally became captivated by the actor. She turned, “Me and Billy Bob” into a website in which she got many responses from fans. After this piece she made a photo piece where she drew the “Billy Bob” tattoo Angelina Jolie had on her arm onto her leg everyday over and over the same place for an entire month. The idea of fan clubs and fan culture became a new project in which she made temporary tattoos that fans could order from the web site.
In 2005 McDonald created some digital pieces about zombies. She became intrigued with why people love horror movies and what the crucial elements are to producing them. She didn’t like them at all when she began this project, but now she loves them. Currently she is making another digital piece in which she is screaming in different scenes of different horror movies. And instead of the scream being a gesture of weakness, her screams are more powerful and seemingly protect her from whatever may be happening in the particular scene.
